ABOUT THESE 4 CHICKS:
I have a group of four fall chicks available now! Hatch date of the large "white" hen is 8/12/xxxx, and hatch dates for the others is 9/4/xxxx. I do plan on wintering mine over indoors this year, as it's already getting cold, and the September chicks especially won't be big enough in time. This is why I have to let this group of four go. I just don't have room for this many adult chickens in the house when they get bigger!
Please note: These chicks are handled daily and are TAME. The rooster is especially friendly and easy going. The Wyandottes are more active and like to flap and fly more.
Left to right main photo:
Gold-laced Wyandotte pullet, Blue Copper Marans pullet, Blue Copper Marans cockerel, Blue Splash Marans pullet.
After the group photo are individual photos of each chick. After that are photos from the Internet of mature chickens, so you can get an idea of what they will look like as adults.
Both breeds are considered "Heritage Breeds" here in the United States, and Marans are quite rare and valuable.
The idea of this group is a breeding trio of Marans, plus a Wyandotte female for added egg production. Marans lay one extra large egg about every other day. Wyandottes lay medium-large eggs nearly every day. Remember that they will lay more the second season and beyond. These should start laying sometime between January and March.
Alternately, if you prefer more eggs, you can switch out the blue copper female for a second Wyandotte. That would give you a breeding pair of Marans plus two Wyandotte layers.
You will be able to tell which eggs came from which hen by the colors, so you will know which ones you want to hatch, if any. You can easily hatch them in a $20 incubator. However, both Marans and Wyandottes tend to be very broody and make excellent mothers, so if you don't mind the break in laying while she sets and raises chicks, you can just let one of the hens do the hatching! Marans will even adopt ducklings they are so accepting as mothers.
Here are the colors that will be produced in the chicks, if you hatch the Marans eggs. Blue does not breed true, but I'll give you the breakdown of what colors you would get from this trio.
From the blue copper hen (darkest chocolate eggs) and this male you will get:
-25% black copper
-50% blue copper
-25% blue splash
From the splash hen (chocolate eggs with speckles) and this male you will get:
-50% blue copper
-50% blue splash
The egg colors will be as follows:
Darkest solid chocolate brown will be from the blue female, dark brown with very dark speckles will be from the splash female, and light brown will be from the Wyandotte. You should not hatch the eggs from the Wyandotte, as the chicks would be mutts. Again, the Wyandotte is just for color variety and more eggs. Note that you will get half males and half females of each color when you hatch your own chicks. Also, the black copper Marans lay a deep dark chocolate egg just like the blue coppers.
I am asking $100 for the group of four as pictured, or $80 if you prefer a Marans pair (splash hen + blue rooster) plus two of the Gold-Laced Wyandotte females.
For just two Wyandotte pullets: $25.
For just the Marans blue pair: $65.
For just the large Marns splash hen: $30.
ABOUT THE BREEDS:
===MARANS===
The Marans (there is always an "s" on the end - even if you are speaking of an individual bird) is a breed of chicken originating in France. It is a medium breed compared to others, popular for poultry shows and is a dual purpose fowl known both for its extremely dark eggs as well as for its very fine meat qualities. This breed is still rare in the United States.
Marans are generally quiet and docile; but they are quite active, taking well to free ranging in rough terrain and are also tough and disease-resistant. They were originally bred in the marshy areas of France and can cope with damper conditions. They tolerate confinement well, and the roosters tend to be docile and quiet.
Marans lay around 150 dark brown eggs each year. Marans are an historically dual-purpose bird, prized not only for their dark eggs but for their table qualities as well.
Marans are particularly cold-hardy and well suited to the climate in Montana. If you plan on hatching eggs, people typically keep the female chicks to sell or as layers, while the male chicks can be raised up as broilers (for meat). The males can be distinguished by their combs at approximately age 3 weeks.
Adult hens weigh about 7-8 pounds, adult roosters 8-9 pounds.
===WYANDOTTES===
The Wyandotte is a breed of chicken originating in the United States. The first examples of the breed appeared in xxxxs. Wyandottes are a docile, dual-purpose breed kept for their brown eggs and for meat. They appear in a wide variety of color patterns, and are popular show birds. The Wyandotte lays pale brown or tan eggs, and Wyandotte hens are devoted mothers. Their stocky bodies and rose combs make Wyandottes also cold-hardy for Montana winters.
The hens (females) will lay around 200 eggs a year with an exceptional hen laying around 240 eggs a year. The eggs are brown or tinted. The hens weigh around 6 pounds and also make great setters.
